HOT PACK OR COLD PACK – WHAT TO CHOOSE

It is very important to choose correctly weather to use hot pack or cold pack as it can make a difference between worsening your injury improving the condition.

  • In an acute injury (recent injury/ immediately after the injury occurs) – use a cold pack. Use cold pack for atleast 2- 3 days following injury, then after that it depends on the condition and your doctor on what he advices.
  • Use heat for muscle pain and stiffness.
  • Always while applying hot or cold pack wrap the pack in a cloth around it and then put it on the body part to avoid burns.

  • Whether it’s a cold pack or hot pack, 10 – 15 minutes of application is enough.
  • If anyone has arthritis, heat works best for them.
  • Hot pack increases the circulation in that part of the body and relaxes the muscles.
  • If you are applying hot pack to your back, it is always better to lie on your stomach and place the pack on top of you rather than lying down on the hot pack as this increases the chances of skin burn.
  • When not to use hot pack – if the area is bruised or swollen, it is advisable to use cold therapy.Heat therapy also shouldn’t be applied to an area with an open wound. People with certain pre-existing conditions should not use heat pack because of increased risk of burns or complications due to heat.
