OSGOOD-SCHLATTER'S DISEASE

Osgood Schlatter's disease is the inflammation of the bone at the top of the shin bone, where the patellar tendon attaches. It is an overuse knee injury.

It usually occurs in boys of 11-15 years and girls of 8-13 years of age.

Symptoms -
  • Pain, swelling, and tenderness over the tibial tuberosity.
  • Pain is experienced while doing activities such as running, jumping or with kneeling.
  • Stairs, squatting and kneeling is known to be painful.
  • Weakness of quadriceps muscle is present in chronic cases.

  • Causes –

Strong repetitive quadriceps contractions can cause a traction force on the tibial tuberosity, thus disrupting the immature bone.

    PHYSIOTHERAPY TREATMENT
  • High impact activities like jumping and running are to be stopped immediately.
  • An infrapatellar knee strap can be used to scatter forces away from the site of pain.
  • Mc connel taping can be done to reduce pain and load at the site of injury.

  • Ice & TENS Machine- helps to reduce pain and increases the rate of healing.
  • Rest is important to reduce the pain.
  • Exercises -

  • Stretching - One of the reasons for Osgood Schlatter's disease are tight quadriceps muscles, ITB, hamstrings, hip flexors and calf muscles. So stretching these, muscles if tight can help reduce pain and solve the condition initially. Perform the stretches 3 times and hold for 30 seconds. Strengthening – strengthening the muscles around the knee is necessary. But quadriceps strengthening should be avoided in the initial stage of injury.
