OLECRANON BURSITIS

Olecranon bursitis (student’s elbow) is due to the inflammation and swelling of a bursa in the elbow. This bursa is directly between the point of the elbow and the skin.

Damaged or irritated bursa causes olecranon bursitis. This damage can occur due to a direct blow to the point of the elbow or by repeated minor trauma such as resting on your elbows on a hard surface for long periods of time. This causes wear and tear of the bursa and gradually can lead to thickening of the bursa, inflammation and bursitis. Symptoms -
  1. Pain and swelling, pain is felt most when leaning on your elbows or while bending and straightening the elbow.
  2. Tingling / pins and needles
  3. Weakness

PHYSIOTHERAPY MANAGEMENT -

During the first 24-48 hours of injury, the RICE regime should be incooperated (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). This helps to reduce swelling, pain and tissue damage.

You should avoid the activities you think may have caused your bursitis, such as leaning on your elbows on a hard surface.

Elbow pad can also be used

Some of the exercises to be done are –

Hold the stretches for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times.
  1. Elbow flexion stretch 2. Elbow extension stretch 3. Supination and pronation stretch 4. Supination and pronation of forearm – repeat 10-15 times 5. Elbow flexion and extension – repeat 10-15 times
