FUNCTIONAL INDEPENDENCE MEASUREMENT (FIM) SCALE

The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is a scale consisting of 18-items that assesses an individual's physical, psychological and social function. This scale is used to evaluate an individual’s level of disability as well as to see results of rehabilitation or medical intervention.


This scale is used for patients with functional mobility impairments.


This scale grades the functional status of a person depending upon the level of assistance is required by the individual.


Grading ranges from "total assistance with helper" to "complete independence with no helper". Even if the person uses any assistive device, the person is considered as completely independent.



The levels of FIM are –


 No Helper
  • 7. Complete Independence (Timely, Safety)
  • 6. Modified Independence (Device)
    •  Helper - Modified Dependence
  • 5. Supervision (Subject = 100%)
  • 4. Minimal Assistance (Subject = 75% or more)
  • 3. Moderate Assistance (Subject = 50% or more)
    •  Helper - Complete Dependence
  • 2. Maximal Assistance (Subject = 25% or more)
  • 1. Total Assistance or not Testable (Subject less than 25%)

    • If not testable due to any risk, then score 1. Do not leave any blanks.
